Scottish Highlands Hiking – Coulags
July 4
Today we headed to the hamlet of Coulags, about an hour from Torridon. It was a very rainy day and so the long hike for the day was cancelled, and the whole group headed on the 4.5-mile hike option. This was very fun, as the whole group hiking together is unique for a Backroads day. We hiked toward a bothy (a shelter that is available for use to anybody) along an old hunter’s tracking route toward Loch an Eoin, and then beyond.
Due to the rain, about half of the group turned back to the vans from the old stone bothy, where we had snacks. The rest of us, plus one guide headed further into the rain and fog. We crossed streams on rocks and (mostly successfully) avoided many boggy sinkholes to the tucked-away lake. The 4.5 miles seemed like 10 miles due to the weather elements. Invigorating hike!!
Isle of Skye
After the hike the group headed to Portree on the Isle of Skye. We checked in to the fantastic Cullin Hills Hotel with a great view of the Cullin mountains and the colorful Portree Bay. That afternoon we were treated to a private Scottish Gaelic music demonstration in the hotel. Then we had dinner at the hotel.
